Task 1: Algebraic Expansion - Self Revision (10 mins)

Individually do a quick revision on algebraic expansion / simplification. The focus is on the step-by-step process in arriving at the eventual answer.

Task 3: Individual / Pair Work (Algebraic Equation) (25 mins)

Instructions
• Each clip should not be longer than 1 minute.
• Make sure your voice is clearly and distinctly captured.
• You may use PhotoBooth or QuickTime to complete the task - keeping in mind that the file size of the video clip should be as small as possible.
• Email your clip to Mr Johari at nurjohari@gmail.com and he will then review and upload your clip in the Maths blog. [you should complete the mathematical problem with step-by-step working and script during the given time]

Expression and Equation
Task 1:
In this task review the view clip again on how ' x finds out his value'.
Go through the site Study Guides and Strategies and attempt the following questions.
What is the difference between an equation and an expression?
What are the characteristics of a linear expression?
What does it mean to solve an equation?
Can an equation have multiple solutions?
Task 2:
Solve the following equations for the value/s of x.
- 8x - 46 = 2
- 8x + 46 = 2
- -8x +46 = 2
- 8x + 46 = 46
- 8x + 46 = 8x
Can an equation have multiple solutions or no solution? If so, what is the implication.

Activity 1:
Watch the movie, X finds out his value, and answer the following questions.
Given the following:
2x + 4 + x = 8 + 2(3 + x) -3
- Is this an expression or an equation? Why?
- What is the variable?
- Why is an equation like a see-saw?
- Simplify 2x + 4 + x Answer: ___________________

The objective of the activity is to use concrete representation to find the unknown variable. Algebraic reasoning is used to solve or find the numerical value of the variable.

to have a better understanding of the historical background of Algebra and the fundamental nomenclature used in Algebra.
Task
In groups of 4s please complete the 4-stages of Algebra:introduction shown below. In each group appoint a scriber who will post the group's findings on-line. Remember to quote and check reliability of sources.

Stage 2:
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was the author of a book entitled Al-jabr w'al muqabala (written in 830 AD) that gave the name al-jabr to the branch of mathematics that is now known by its modern spelling as algebra.
