Introduction to Algebraic Equation

Activity 1:
Watch the movie, X finds out his value, and answer the following questions.

Given the following:
2x + 4 + x = 8 + 2(3 + x) -3
  1. Is this an expression or an equation? Why?
  2. What is the variable?
  3. Why is an equation like a see-saw?
  4. Simplify 2x + 4 + x Answer: ___________________
  5. Simplify 8 + 2(3 + x) -3 Answer: ___________________
  6. Solve the above for x Answer: x = ________________
Activity 2:

The objective of the activity is to use concrete representation to find the unknown variable. Algebraic reasoning is used to solve or find the numerical value of the variable.

  • Levels 1 and 2 contain two scales.
  • Level 3 is more difficult and has three scales.
  • Your goal is to determine the weight of one or more of the objects.

    1. It is an equation as there is an equal sign in a middle of two problems.
    2. A variable is a letter that represents a number, such as a, b c, x, y, z.
    3. It is because we have to balance out the equation.

    1. It is an equation as there is an equal sign and on both sides of the equal sign, the values of the answer is the same.

    2. The variable is 'x'

    3. Because both sides of the equation, which is seperated by the equal sign has the same answer, and the equal sign is like the middle point of the see-saw.

    1)It is an equation as it is comparing two equal number sentences which may be different.

    3. The equal sign is like the middle of the see-saw, the side is balance with the two equation with the same answer.

    It is an Equation as there is (a=b) in the number statement.
    2. What is the variable?
    The variable is 'x'
    3. Why is an equation like a see-saw?
    When they are equal, they are balanced, like a see-saw. When one side becomes greater than the other, the side that is greater, like a see-saw, would sink down and become unequal.
    4. Simplify 2x + 4 + x Answer: 3x+4
    5. Simplify 8 + 2(3 + x) -3 Answer: 2x+11
    6. Solve the above for x Answer: x = 7

    3. It is as we keep the variable on one side of the fucrum the other side should also have around the same amount of weight to same.
