ALGEBRA: Introduction
Objective
to have a better understanding of the historical background of Algebra and the fundamental nomenclature used in Algebra.
Task
In groups of 4s please complete the 4-stages of Algebra:introduction shown below. In each group appoint a scriber who will post the group's findings on-line. Remember to quote and check reliability of sources.
Stage 1:
World of
Mathematics on Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi
Who is Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi ?
Identify his contributions in Mathematics and Sciences.

Stage 2:
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was the author of a book entitled Al-jabr w'al muqabala (written in 830 AD) that gave the name al-jabr to the branch of mathematics that is now known by its modern spelling as algebra.
Stage 4:
Watch the following video on Introduction to Algebra and explain the differences between like terms and unlike terms.

Stage 3:
Use the website or mathematics dictionary and find the definition of the following. Use diagrams or examples to illustrate your explanation.
- variable
- constant
- coefficient
- expression
- equation
Stage 4:
Watch the following video on Introduction to Algebra and explain the differences between like terms and unlike terms.
1)Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was the one who introduced algebra to the world.(Note that he was not the one who invented Algebra) http://sstclass105maths.blogspot.com/2010/03/algebra-introduction.html#comments (Name was taken from here)
ReplyDelete2)Algebra is the method of representing numbers using symbols such as a,b,c,x,y,z
3)1.A variable is something that can be different digits
2.A constant is something that has a single definition
3.A coefficient is a number in front of a variable\
4.A expression is a well-formed combination of mathematical symbols, variables and constants.
5.A equation is a math statement where 2 expressions are equal.
4)Like terms can be added or subtracted while unlike terms cannot be added or subtracted.
Stage 1
ReplyDeleteAbu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, geographer, who was a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. He is one of the 2 people who founded algebra, the other of which was Diophantus.

ReplyDeleteStage 3:
1. Variable - A variable is a letter that represents an Unknown number such as x, y, z.
2. Constant - It is a fixed number that does not change.
3. Coefficient - It is the number placed in front of a variable for example 6x. 6 is the coefficient.
4. Expression - It is usually made out of one or more terms.
5. Equation - An equation is two expressions, they are of the same value, separated by an equal sign. An example is 2 x 1 = 1 + 1 or y = 5 x z (5z)

ReplyDeleteAbu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi and his colleagues, the Banu Musa, were part of the house of wisdom who translated Greek scientific manuscripts as well as their work in maths. It is from here that he got the knowledge to write the book. Note that it was from the greek’s work that Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi wrote the book there fore he is not the inventor but helped to devalop algebra.

Stage 2:
Algebra is using symbols to represent numbers of which we do not know the value of. We need not only use a,b,c,x,y,z but we can olso use other symbols like .
Stage 3:
1. A variable is a symbol that is used to represent a missing amount that is often times being found out.
2. A constant is a number that is independent of physical measurement, and exist mathematics.
3. A coefficient is a number before a variable. For example, in 9x, the 9 would be the coefficient.
4. A expression is a term to describe well-formed combination of numbers, variables, or even both. It is made of both operators and operands.
5. An expression or proposition relating to math or numbers for example: 1+1=2 is a equation
