Algebra: Equation

Introduction to Algebraic Equation

Activity 1:
Watch the movie, X finds out his value, and answer the following questions.

Given the following:
2x + 4 + x = 8 + 2(3 + x) -3
  1. Is this an expression or an equation? Why?
  2. What is the variable?
  3. Why is an equation like a see-saw?
  4. Simplify 2x + 4 + x Answer: ___________________
  5. Simplify 8 + 2(3 + x) -3 Answer: ___________________
  6. Solve the above for x Answer: x = ________________
Activity 2:

The objective of the activity is to use concrete representation to find the unknown variable. Algebraic reasoning is used to solve or find the numerical value of the variable.

  • Levels 1 and 2 contain two scales.
  • Level 3 is more difficult and has three scales.
  • Your goal is to determine the weight of one or more of the objects.

ALGEBRA: INTRODUCTION

ALGEBRA: Introduction
Objective
to have a better understanding of the historical background of Algebra and the fundamental nomenclature used in Algebra.
Task
In groups of 4s please complete the 4-stages of Algebra:introduction shown below. In each group appoint a scriber who will post the group's findings on-line. Remember to quote and check reliability of sources.

Stage 1:
World of
Mathematics on Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi
Who is
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi ?
Identify his contributions in Mathematics and Sciences.

Stage 2:
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi was the author of a book entitled
Al-jabr w'al muqabala (written in 830 AD) that gave the name al-jabr to the branch of mathematics that is now known by its modern spelling as algebra.

What is Algebra?
[reference: click on formula below]

Construct a simple mind map to illustrate this and post your mind map or link on-line.

You may refer to sample for ideas.

Stage 3:
Use the website or mathematics dictionary and find the definition of the following. Use diagrams or examples to illustrate your explanation.

  1. variable
  2. constant
  3. coefficient
  4. expression
  5. equation

Stage 4:
Watch the following video on
Introduction to Algebra and explain the differences between like terms and unlike terms.

Introduction to Algebra Part 2

Dear 105s,

Please solve the problem below using both the Unitary Model Method and the Algebraic Method.

Look at your solutions. What are some of the similarities and differences between the 2 different methods?

Introduction to Algebra Part 1

Dear 105s,

Please look through the slides before I began with Algebra in the next lesson.

The History of Numbers (12 January 2010)

The use of numbers has started since the ancient time till now.

In your groups,

1) List out some of the Ancient Civilizations that have once existed in our world.

2) Decide on one Civilization that your group has listed out and carry out a research on the number system that was associated with this civilization.

3) Using a 5-slides Keynote presentation, develop a presentation that describe the development history of this set of number system, describe the number system and depicts digit from 0 to 9, the number 10, 100 & 1000.

4) Hence, develop a simple worksheet using Pages, which required your friends to convert numbers from your choice of number system to our present Arabic number system. You should have 4 questions that involved a 2-digits number, 4 questions that involved a 3-digits number and 2 questions that involved a 4-digits number.

5) Please submit your presentation slide and worksheet by 20 January 2010.

6) Please acknowledge all information that the team has taken from the Internet. The method of acknowledgement is (a) The Title of the website. (b) The URL. (c) The Date and Time where the information was view.

The Need of Numbers (12 January 2010)

As an individual, consider

1) Why is there a need of having numbers?

2) When did the first use of numbers, based on your imagination, occur?

Post your response under the Comment section.
